SIP Survey Snippet – Avaya PBX and SBCs
Previously on the SIPTRUNK.com blog we shared the release of the SIP School’s SIP Survey 2015 from SIP School CEO, Graham Francis.
What’s interesting about the 2015 SIP Survey is that it not only features more respondents than previous years but, it includes responses from both Internet Telephony Service Providers (ITSPs or, “providers”) and a new segment, the actual end users of SIP trunking services.
We promised that we’d break the in-depth survey into bite-sized chunks so today’s theme is Avaya.

Avaya Top SIP Trunk PBX Manufacturer
The SIP Survey asked end users who the PBX manufacturer is for their installed system. By a solid majority, Avaya was the top choice:
In previous years the SIP Survey points out the top three manufacturers have historically been Avaya, Cisco, and Mitel in that order.

Avaya continues to increase its stronghold while Microsoft is making some inroads.
“(This) tells me that Avaya, Cisco and Mitel are mature,” said David Chavez of Avaya.
“Microsoft is developing. The Asterisk answer is interesting and likely skewed higher since you have students in your survey,” said Chavez.
Gary Audin of Delphi explains that Microsoft Lync and the newly re-branded Skype for Business will “complement but
not rapidly replace the existing IP PBX.”
The popularity of Avaya stems from its “single vendor approach.”
“What is sometimes missed is that Lync needs many third party hardware and software additions to complete its operation while Avaya and Cisco have complete packages,” said Audin.

Not everyone uses a Session Border Controller (SBC) but if one is deployed, who was the manufacturer?
The Sip Survey says…Avaya.
Once again Avaya leads the pack for SIP trunk hardware but not by such a large margin this time and closely followed by the troublesome response of “No SBC Installed.”
“Having no SBC is likely ok for cloud/hosted if the clients are line side only. Otherwise it speaks to a gamblers mentality,” said Chavez.
